Launching out of his basement with just a few simple shirts and pants, John focused on making gear that could withstand the rigors of the wilderness while keeping the customer in mind. He used his own experience testing prototypes on hunting and fishing trips to create practical designs perfect for an active outdoor lifestyle. Word soon spread among John’s friends and fellow outdoorsmen about his durable, comfortable clothing. Local demand quickly grew, allowing John to upgrade from his basement to a small warehouse.
As business expanded, John brought on a few employees to help meet the growing demand. However, he made sure Redhead Clothing® stayed true to its roots by keeping the operation small and focused. Each product was designed with purpose, using field-tested fabrics and insights from John’s own adventures. This passion for the outdoors and dedication to quality quickly earned Redhead a loyal following across the region.
Over the next few years, the product line expanded to serve hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts nationwide. Our Design Process
Creating rugged outdoor apparel and equipment requires extensive testing and refinement. We don’t release a Redhead Clothing® product until it has endured brutal field use and exceeded expectations. Our development team uses a rigorous design cycle to guarantee every piece of gear we release meets our exacting durability and performance standards.
Here is how we create gear Tested Tough for the Outdoor Lifestyle:
1. Identify Needs
Our designers and product team use customer feedback and their own experiences to identify needs. We look for gaps in our current product line, opportunities for improvement, and potential innovations.
2. Research Materials
We partner with top fabric suppliers to find or develop materials that can withstand rugged outdoor use. Our preferred textiles blend toughness, breathability, weather resistance and quiet performance.
3. Develop Prototypes
Initial handmade samples are created and tested for fit, function and durability. 3D modeling helps visualize how designs perform in the field. We refine details like pocket placement, seam construction, and range of motion.
4. Field Testing
Prototype apparel gets put through the ringer in real-world conditions. Our staff takes prototypes hiking, hunting, fishing, and completes daily tasks in them. This reveals what works, what doesn’t, and where improvements can be made.
5. Gather Feedback
Testers complete survey feedback on comfort, durability, features and function. Customer test groups may trial some items too. This input helps guide the next round of improvements.
6. Repeat and Refine
Using tester feedback, our designers tweak designs and create the next series of prototypes. We repeat the make, test, feedback, refine cycle until all standards are met.
7. Finalize for Production
Once prototypes satisfy all requirements after exhaustive testing, we finalize the design, patterns, materials and construction. The product gets officially approved for production, packaging and launch.
8. Continuous Improvement
Even after release, we constantly test products in the field and solicit customer feedback. Collecting real-world insights allows us to rapidly fine-tune and update existing items with incremental improvements.
